For Tuesday (7/6)

Finish reading "Sand County Almanac" (281-294).

I'd like you to bring in two more discussion questions to share with the class.

Consider the following:

Does this portion of the text change your reading of the first half in any way?
Does Leopold introduce new ideas or expand upon those brought up in the first half?

On Wednesday, you'll have the chance to work on your projects with your groups. Come prepared.

-Read "The Summer Day" by Mary Oliver (AE 737)

-Choose a poem and answer one "Reading Like a Writer" question on your blog.

-Comment on your partner's Ninemile Wolves post.

Week Two:

5/24:

-Read first half of Blood Dazzler by Patricia Smith.

-Answer one "Reading Like a Writer" question on your blog; use a question you haven't answered yet.

5/25:

-Read second half of Blood Dazzler.

-Choose one of Smith's poems--one that stood out to you--and write an imitation poem based on one of your own experiences within a specific environment or place. Post this to your blog.

5/26 (lab day):

Into the Wild viewing begins.

-Respond either to your partner's "Reading Like a Writer" post (Blood Dazzler) or to his/her poem post.

5/27-5/28 (28th is a lab day):

Week Three:

6/1:

Bring your visual analysis thesis statement to class.

-Read from Walden by Henry David Thoreau (AE 9-25)

-Blog about similarities and differences you've noticed between Chris McCandless and Thoreau.

Peer Response Day. Bring three copies of your visual analysis draft.

6/3:

-Read "A First American Views His Land" by N. Scott Momaday (AE 570-581); answer one Reading Like a Writer question that you haven't already.

6/4:

Visual Analysis Due.

-Read "Speech at Grand Canyon, Arizona, May 6, 1903" by Teddy Roosevelt (AE).

-Respond to one of your partner's posts from this week.

Week Four:

-Read "Polemic: Industrial Tourism and the National Parks" by Edward Abbey (AE 413-433)

-Blog in response to a "Reading Like a Writer" (RLW) question.

6/8:

-Read from "A Thousand-Mile Walk to the Gulf" by John Muir (AE 85)

-Blog: answer a RLW question.

-Read from "My First Summer in the Sierras" by John Muir (AE 98)

-Respond to one of your partner's blog posts from this week.

-Read from "Silent Spring" by Rachel Carson (AE 366)

-Blog: Analyze Carson's piece using one of the rhetorical strategies listed on the worksheet.

-Read emailed article. Write a personal response on your blog (as opposed to a critical response). Be prepared to share during class.

Rhetorical Analysis Due. (Final copy, rough draft, peer response-if not already emailed to me.)

6/18:

-Read "Having Faith" by Sandra Steingraber (AE 929-938). In blog: What is her purpose/audience in writing this? How does she get her message across? Would you consider this writing-as-activism? Why or why not?

Week Six:

Tues. 6/22:

-Read "Manifesto" (AE 505) and "The Making of a Marginal Farm" (AE 507) by Wendell Berry. Blog a personal response and an answer to the following question: What is his intent with each piece?

-Email group project issue to me by the end of the day.

6/23:

-Find one current article dealing with your issue. Bring it to class. You can email yourself the link (if you find it online) rather than print, so long as you email me the link as well.

6/24:

-Read "Fecundity" by Annie Dillard. Blog: Write very specifically about something in your homeplace with the same attention and detail that Dillard does. This may be prose or poetry, depending on your preference.

6/25:

No reading.
